#95822 Special Preview for th SkratchLounge

Posted Supacuts on 29 November 2012 - 05:19 PM

This isn't public yet so please don't share it with anyone! This is just so you lot get a sneak peek and point out any errors!

I will be publishing at the weekend, pending changes.

If you missed getting a video in or have been excluded, please check your inboxes because I have requested new links. I will also add any new entries if I can.

Don't worry too much if you are not included - I eventually plan to do a looper and then a compilation containing the original and new videos.

Look out for Session Three!

#90986 THE LOUNGE IS SAVED!

Posted Gizmo on 10 May 2012 - 01:00 PM

For the record, I take no delight in banning anyone. Usually diplomacy wins, but this just wouldn't stop. I did this for the lounge, for the people concerned and for my own sanity. Hopefully it's over now and we can all get back to being a friendly community again.

#90133 BEEF

Posted Gizmo on 26 April 2012 - 02:37 PM

As you all know, I run a tight ship. I draw a very clear line regarding what you can and can't do, as well as how you treat other people.

The recent beef exhibited is to a point expected, but this particular one has spiralled out of control, especially the offline stuff that's been happening. If what I'm told is true, then this in particular has been pretty unpleasant stuff.

In the years that the skratchlounge has been running, I've banned one person, and asked another to leave. I did not like to do this, but it was necessary. I trust I won't have to do this again.

Let me state this plain and clear - when you're in my house, you live by my rules. If you can't, then you're not welcome.

I don't have the time to patrol the lounge on an hourly basis, so I will deal with beef swiftly and decisively. You have been warned.

#85989 Fake DJs...

Posted Da BOSS on 21 January 2012 - 09:49 PM

Well, my take on this is simple. It's about the results that comes out at a gig. Now is your gig a party where people are wanting to dance, or is it a hip hop venue (my type of crowd) that comes out to hear/watch and be apart of a true hip hop venue that has graffiti, dj's, emcees, b-boy break dancing..... I still spin classic techno and house from time to time where people will dance. Mostly mixing, but a little scratching here and their, but not that much anymore. In that setting, I would say that as long as you sound good, thats all that matters regardless to weather you're a vinyl guy "Like Me" controller guy, or a cd-j guy. Personally I'd have more respect for the dudes that do it the original way but today they have software that blend/beat-match for you. In that setting your crowd mostly don't care what you use, but in a hip hop venue, they want to see skillz not technology... 2 tables wit vinyl and a mixer. Not cd-j's or controllers. Thats like going to a freestyle battle with written rhymes on paper or some pre-recorded shit..... People just need to know the difference between a person playing music, party dj (being able to use effects and beat match with all technology or vinyl, and a DJ Tablist that uses all skill with no technology via turntables and a mixer... The hip hop crowd is mostly the only one's that care about skillz and doing it the real original way. At a party, you do what you need to do to rock the crowd regardless of what you use.... BUT, YOU GUYS OUT THERE THAT JUST PLAY SONG AFTER SONG, WIT NO MIX/BLENDING, NO SCRATCHING, YOU GUYS ARE NOT FUCKING DJ'S... Damn mix tapes with just songs on there one after another. Anybody can download songs and burn then to a cd..... SMH

#95233 jfb matrix routine

Posted Vekked on 09 November 2012 - 10:13 PM

The beat he's using is actually editted like... if you played it it wouldn't be a normal beat, it'd be chopped up, it's so that the 1st beat of every bar lands at 12 o'clock or the needle or whatever reference point you're using.

Thanks man! Basically for my editting it's purely so I don't have to use cue points. When I'm making my juggles I usually have like 2-4 cue points per track. When I put together my 6 minute routine I only have 3 cue point available on my 57 per side, so instead of going to my laptop to change every song so I have 3 new cue points, I try to only use 3 cue points for my entire routine... this means whenever possible instead of cue pointing to a certain part of the beat, I will edit it so that the part I want starts at the next rotation.

All of my juggle routines are composed and can be done with the original track if I have it separately, whereas with these style of juggles they edit the programming and pattern in the beats and add/take away kicks and snares to achieve different patterns, it's very production dependent.

My biggest tip as far as editing goes is set your session to 33.33 BPM so whenever you need something to land on a sticker you can put it on a 1 beat and know that's where a sticker will be. My other tip is don't edit TOO much... remember it's a DJ battle and not a production battle. It seems that people these days are editing to the point that they're editing out some pretty key parts of a routine, like transitions. Craze always had super creative ways to transition from 1 routine to the next smoothly and I think that added a lot to his sets, and is an important parts of DJing. Nowadays a lot of people just have a jet-stream sound or a pre-recorded mix from 1 beat to the next, and completely neglect that aspect of a routine.

#93574 Crab Scratch

A wise man (Yoshi) once told me learn all your patterns and what not, with tapping and clicking before you get into crabbing. Most crabbing i hear is dirty and uncontrolled. Those cats who kill it with crabs definitely have the tapping and clicking down to a science.

This, this 1000x this. I used to try and do the fastest crabs and fastest two click flares I could pull out. I started to watch and learn from D-Styles and Yoshi because they're insane scratchers who have transforming down.

Anyway, about crabs, just prop your thumb softly agains the fader and start with your ring finger and work it down (I can't do a four finger crab for my life). I also like to do a quick transform with my index finger and then roll with ring, middle, and index to make it sound like an four finger crab. Also, (in my opinion) open fader crabs > closed fader crabs. Here's how I do them at 0:12.
